LGIAsuper members go behind the scenes at 1300SMILES Stadium

Twenty lucky LGIAsuper members received passes to the Cowboys v Rabbitohs match last Saturday night, as well as an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of 1300SMILES Stadium as part of our recent online competition.

The tour added to an already action-packed evening at the LGIAsuper Community Hub, where we were joined by representatives from the Tackle Domestic Violence campaign.

LGIAsuper is proud to join forces with the North Queensland Cowboys, the North Queensland Women’s Legal Service, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Legal Service, and Relationships Australia in raising awareness of, and funds for, domestic and family violence prevention and response. 

Domestic and family violence remains a huge issue in communities across Australia, and we all need to take a stand. Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Hub to show their support for the Tackle Domestic Violence campaign.

This week’s merchandise item was a pair of LGIAsuper-Cowboys thunder sticks which were used to make plenty of noise as the Cowboys entered the field to mark Jason Taumalolo’s 150th NRL game.

It probably won’t be a match the lock forward remembers too fondly, with the Rabbitohs snatching victory from the jaws of defeat courtesy of a late Adam Reynolds penalty goal.

The signs weren’t great early on, with a trademark George Burgess charge putting the visitors on the board in just the 3rd minute, before two penalty goals from Reynolds extended the lead to 10 points.

Antonio Winterstein returned serve for the Cowboys in the 18th minute after nice lead-up work from LGIAsuper Player Ambassador Michael Morgan. Reynolds and Johnathan Thurston then traded penalty goals before the halftime break.

Thurston’s 46th minute penalty goal reduced Souths’ lead to just two points, but a converted try from Rabbitohs’ hooker Damien Cook gave the visitors a crucial eight-point buffer.

At 18-10 down, Thurston’s decision to take the two points after a South Sydney penalty seemed strange, but when he converted Winterstein’s second try of the night in the 71st minute to level the scores, it was more than justified.

Morgan put the Cowboys ahead for the first time with a calmly-potted field goal in the 74th minute and it looked like North Queensland had the match in the bag when Reynold’s attempt at levelling the scores went wide. 

The 14,270-strong crowd was then reduced to silence when the referees ruled Jake Granville offside. Reynolds had no troubles with the simple penalty kick and the Rabbitohs took the match 20-19.

The result didn’t go our way, but the North Queensland Cowboys showed plenty of skill and desire – and we’re sure Paul Green will have them ready to go for next Friday’s Grand Final rematch against the Melbourne Storm. Go Cowboys!
