Positive outcomes all-round at the Hub

The home side welcomed back Jordan McLean and Matt Scott and we welcomed the Cowboys Community Foundation in another action-packed night at the LGIAsuper Community Hub.

Howdy Club members took home free Clap Banners while visitors to the Hub rubbed shoulders with representatives from the Cowboys Community Foundation – a local charity dedicated to improving employment, health and social outcomes for young North Queenslanders.
 
Speaking of positive outcomes, the return of representative forwards McLean and Scott was instrumental in the North Queensland Cowboys’ 20-18 win over the Newcastle Knights. 
 
A half-time ‘spray’ from coach Paul Green also played a part in the victory, with the home side bouncing back from a 12-point deficit at the break.
 
After a nightmare start against the Dragons, things once again started poorly for the home side with Newcastle backrower Lachlan Fitzgibbon bursting through to score in just the 3rd minute off a superb pass from Jake Cogger.
 
The Knights had their opponents on the ropes for much of the opening quarter, and it was sheer weight of possession that contributed to their second try – hooker Danny Levi finding Aidan Guerra who went over untouched in the 10th minute.
 
A string of penalties allowed the Cowboys to work their way back into the game – and after coming close to scoring on two occasions, they finally managed to cross with Johnathan Thurston finding the chest of Justin O’Neill with a pinpoint pass in the 19th minute.
 
Ken Sio extended the visitors leads just moments later via a penalty goal before Fitzgibbon scored his second try to give Newcastle an 18-6 lead.
 
The Cowboys employed a more direct style of play in the second half and were rewarded with back-to-back tries to Coen Hess and Johnathan Thurston.
 
Hess was unstoppable from close-range, charging on to a nice pass from Thurston in the 49th minute before the future immortal was on-hand to collect O’Neill’s kick and score a try of his own just three minutes later.
 
North Queensland continued to grind away until the 77th minute when Gavin Cooper scored the match-winning try after superb lead-up play from Thurston and fullback Te Maire Martin.
 
On the back of a hard-earned victory, spirits were high at Saturday’s Members Carnival.
 
The LGIAsuper Community Hub was again a popular addition to the day, with Cowboys and Howdy Club members walking away with some fantastic merchandise and an opportunity to learn more about our fund.
